Industry trends in gamification while creating E-learning courses

With e-learning gaining popularity and becoming sought-after, course creators are in constant pressure to find new, innovative methods of designing compelling and engaging e-learning courses. Gamification is one of those novel ways that has the capability of capturing the learner’s attention.

Learners these days are increasingly distracted and have a very low attention span. Text-rich courses no longer garner learner’s attention. Gamification uses the principles of game mechanics to make learning fun, entertaining and memorable.

Millennial learners are adept with modern technology. With social media and online games becoming the rage among the new-age learners, gamification is becoming increasingly popular in today’s e-learning setting.

Key benefits of gamification include:

  • Learning made fun
  • Enhance learner engagement
  • Enhance problem-solving capabilities
  • Provide a personalized learning experience
  • Reinforced learning

Let’s see where gamification is headed in the E-learning industry.

Connect to the modern, millennial learner

The majority of learners are millennials who are generally more restless with short attention spans. Designing an E-learning course that cater to them is a big challenge. Their connect with games makes gamification a boon to E-learning course providers.

Gamified LMS gaining popularity

Learning management systems (LMS) are embracing the new wave of gamification. Many LMSs are now incorporating gamification techniques like scores and  leaderboards that would help retain a learner’s interest.

Amalgamate with other E-learning strategies

Although gamification can be used as a standalone learning strategy, the current trend is to use it as a mixed learning strategy. Gamification when amalgamated with AR and VR makes your course more immersive. Similarly, using gamification along with microlearning enhances learner engagement.

Gamification is the in-thing in corporate training

Corporate training programs are increasingly incorporating gamification into their training modules. Gamification makes it easy to categorize learning modules based on the level of expertise. Leaderboards, badges, and scores make learning at the workplace a fun-filled activity. Creating collaborative learning modules help bring in the element of team play.

Today’s learners are born in the digital age. While using gamification in your E-learning course, do not just limit yourself to leaderboards and badges. Think beyond providing instant, extrinsic value to the learner. What the learner actually wants is a long-lasting, intrinsic value that your course can provide.

With gamification, the possibilities are endless. Beat the boredom of your learners. Go the gamification way!

The new normal in learning

Picture John Smith from the 1960s, 70s or even 80s. Life followed a fairly linear pattern of school-job-retirement. A layoff may throw a spanner in the works, but it was definitely not the norm. If John was, say, a draftsman in an architect’s office, he could hope to get a steadily increasing payslip, maybe change jobs to bigger firms, or even go to night school and become an architect himself. Road to success: The influence of visual elements

The primary focus of creating E-learning courses is to impart knowledge to learners. But not all the courses rich in content become popular and successful. Have you ever thought about why?

One of the reasons could be how the content is presented. Anything that is visually appealing grabs eyeballs. A recent research reports that nearly three-quarters of human beings are visual learners. Visual representation of content keeps the learners engaged and communicates key concepts better.

Agreed that a lot of extra effort, money and time go into the creation of visually-rich courses. But, when weighed with the advantages the visual content provides, all this extra effort is worth every dime.

Let us now dive deep and evaluate the advantages of making our E-learning courses visually rich.

  • Visual elements stay in the long-term memory
While words are processed in our short-term memory, images get stored in our long-term memory. Thus, visual elements form the most effective way of putting a concept across.
  • Quicker and simpler communication
Information represented visually is processed and understood quickly. The processing time of visuals is 60,000 times faster than text. So, an E-learning course that shows content visually will have an edge over a text-only course.
  • Better comprehension
Visual elements have the power of stimulating the human brain in such a way that affects the learner’s cognitive capabilities. Shape, size, colour and spatial orientation are better comprehended when visually represented.
  • More mobile-friendly
Visual content is more suitable for a mobile-friendly course. In an era when screens are getting smaller and navigation happens through a touch screen, content that is visual has a better impact.
  • Learning made fun and engaging
With the use of visual elements, it is relatively easy to bring in the fun-element in the otherwise monotonous courses.

Before we hang up our learning hat, I would like to mention one important aspect of including visual elements in your E-learning course. While including appropriate visuals would be advantageous in more ways than one, the opposite can be disastrous. Please take care to incorporate only relevant, good quality visuals. The visuals used must help the learners connect unfamiliar concepts with the familiar ones. The visual elements must be able to depict a difficult-to-understand topic in a simpler way.

So, it is not just the structure and the content of the course that makes a course successful. It still requires a special ingredient. Visuals!
